I just use Microsoft Excel, which is pretty easy to use and has some data analysis functions, but there are lots of other more powerful programs out there — R (which is free), SPSS, SAS. Excel is a good starter program, though, and it’s probably already on your computer, which is nice.

Your "effective tax rate" is not the rate to figure your additional income tax. If looks like you are in the 15% tax bracket. If you add $3K onto your taxable income, and you are still in the 15% tax bracket, your tax increases by $450, plus a $300 penalty. That's what "marginal tax rate" means.
The addition of $3K may change your other credits and deductions which are based on AGI, so the increase in tax is approximate.
