Go Green With Hip Eco-clothes

Fashionistas across the globe are now joining the movement to ‘Go Green.’ With so many fabulous designers following suit, eco-friendly is no longer considered frumpy. From yoga gear to work wear recyclable clothing is .

You might be wondering what is means for your clothes to be eco-friendly. Environmentally conscious clothing is often made from natural and fair-trade materials like soy, organic cotton and bamboo. The benefits of organic cotton are that it’s not grown with pesticides while non-organic cotton uses more pesticides than any other crop. It takes 1/3 lb of chemicals to make one T-shirt. Fair-trade simply means paying fair wages to the individuals that make the clothing that we love to wear.

Sustainable clothing is very comfortable and materials like organic cotton feel so much better against the skin than prickly polyester does. Cutting edge designers like Portland’s Ryan Christensen are using eco-friendly fabrics for clothing that doesn’t exploit the planet. Christensen is the founder of Sameunderneath, a company that produces eclectic pieces like trendy, sleek garments that are made from bamboo.

An innovative eco-friendly designer called Nau is adding touches of decadence and luxury to an otherwise bland line of organic products. Though founded in 2005 by Eric Reynolds, Nau is jointly operated by a team of 35 industry professionals in various outdoor and sporting companies These professionals come from Nike, Patagonia, The North Face, and Adidas, to name a few. Nau’s popular end of luxury outdoor clothing includes undergarments, layering clothes, fleece insulator, and soft and hard shell pants and jackets. Of course all items are produced from recycled materials and organic cotton. PLA is another material often used, a synthetic derived from corn.

At the moment, many designers cannot keep up with their less sustainable counterparts due to lack of materials, but that is not set in stone. This industry is always changing and shifting, so there’s always something new being developed. With new ideas floating around and innovations to be discovered, the industry is always exciting.

It is becoming increasingly important for designers to give people the products that they desire. Consumers are becoming more eco-conscious and demanding to know where and how the products they buy are made.
