The Truth Behind Eco-Friendly Memory Foam Mattresses

Lets start off by saying memory foam is the furthest thing from natural or eco-friendly. Some pretty toxic stuff is used to create memory foam and eco-friendly memory foam is no different. Only 1 company has successfully create a “natural memory foam” and they’re out of Canada.

Developed by Nasa, who never actually used it during a space mission, memory foam is the best pressure relieving material to date. It’s innexpensive and distributes weight extremely well. All the best mattresses are topped with memory foam these days.

People are realizing that memory foams may not be the healthiest to sleep on. Respiratory issues, headaches and nausea are quite common. Strong chemical odours from new mattresses can last over a month and can offgass for years.

Sleeping on a mattress with such a chemical odor is beginning to raise eyebrows.

What is Eco-Friendly Memory Foam?

5-20% natural is what’s considered eco-friendly. They replace a portion of the chemicals with plant based ingredients. It makes them 5-20% better for your health which doesn’t say much when you consider your face is in it for 2920 hours per year.

Eco-friendly memory foams are growing in popularity as companies promote the environmentally friendliness of the foam. Often times the consumer is mislead into believing the memory foam is natural.

Benefits of Eco Memory Foam

5-20% is still a significant improvement with close to 35 million mattresses are sold annually. It reduces the consumption of petrochemicals, landfill waste and ground pollution. It’s also a step in the right direction.

Looking for Real Eco-Friendly Mattresses?

Natural, true eco-friendly mattresses usually contain natural latex, deriving from rubber tree sap, organic cotton, wool or silk. There are plenty of very good natural mattress companies. Make sure you stay boutique. Keep away from the big brand name mattress companies as natural to them does not mean natural to most. Read the fine print and ask questions.

I think you should get a memory foam mattress. Most people sleep restlessly on their sides instead of sleeping soundly on their backs. Memory foam mattresses will solve this problem because the memory foam supports the whole body weight distribution that sleeping on your back is meant to provide.
