Money Management Tips – What You Need To Know Before Applying For A Credit Card

The article below is from a series of finance related articles, videos, tips and information about Borrowing Money …

Anyone who has ever gone shopping in a retail or department store knows how easy it is to apply for a credit card. Sales people offer the 10% off the purchase price to lure customers into applying. Credit card companies want you to put away your own money and use their MasterCard or Visa credit cards. It is a buy now and pay later world. For most people who recently turned eighteen, this can seem like a tremendous power, especially if cash is tight due to school costs.

Instant approval credit cards may offer an easy option when you find yourself desperately needing school supplies or in need of the basic things. However, far too often the ability to easily apply and get one can lead to overwhelming financial difficulty. Student credit card debt is out of control. Students are inundated with bank credit cards, MasterCard or Visa credit card offers and many do not consider the ramifications of how easy it is to abuse credit.

No one doubts that higher education is expensive. Tuition, room, board and associated fees can deplete savings accounts very quickly. You, as a student, may have such a demanding class schedule that makes working part time impossible. This is especially difficult if you take part in school activities, such as sports or academic organizations. Most parents simply can’t afford to pay for all the additional expenses a student incurs, not to mention if there are other non-curricular expenses and luxuries wanted.

It is important to note that when you apply for a college student credit card and have received it, you must abide by the lender’s terms and conditions. Only use the line of credit as an emergency source of funds should you find yourself in need. You do not want to find yourself with maxed out cards and no way to meet the monthly minimum payments. Pay attention to the fine print and the rates of interest you will be charged.

Do not apply for a credit card every time you step into a store. Don’t fill out an online credit card application every time you are surfing the net. While it is important to have a good credit rating, each credit card you apply for goes against your credit score and can begin lowering it dramatically. There is a fine line between improving your rating and seriously hurting your credit score. Be smart, build credit ratings, use your credit wisely and you will become financially responsible.

If your ATM card has a VISA logo, yes, it's a VISA Check Card. If it had a MasterCard logo, it would be called a MasterMoney card. Same thing, different brand. A VISA Check Card is accepted almost anywhere that accepts VISA credit cards, but the money comes out of your checking account instead of racking up debt.

Some places will not accept VISA Check Cards, specifically car rental companies and hotels. For some reason, they feel if they have to charge additional fees, they stand a better chance to collect if it's a credit card. For standard daily purchases, [...]

Getting an instant approval credit card can be quite easy for people with good to excellent credit score. On the other hand, people with bad credit may find it a bit difficult. The good news is that there are lots of Credit Card companies offering this type of Credit Card even if you have unfavorable credit history.

Try Bank of America. I overpaid a student credit card with them.. not by much, but I overpaid it, so there was a positive balance on the card. They acquired my other bank’s (SunTrust) credit card operation, so my other, credit card was transferred to them. I tried to transfer the balance from the acquired credit card to the other one.. which had a lower APR. No dice, at least, not online, it’s against bank policy. So, I called their customer service center and asked if anything could be done. They shut down the student card with the positive balance. [...]

    Improve Your Credit Score

One thing to improve your credit score is to maintain your credit report. Make sure all the minimum payments of your credit getting paid on time for at least last 12 months. If you are planning to buy new home in the future, please don’t take new loans for it as because it will harm you credit score rating. You can continue your fist loans by adding up your amount of credit and set the monthly payment at affordable cost. This will boost your credit score in the future as long as you can maintain your [...]

There is a statute of limitations for credit card debt, which is the amount of time that they can successfully take legal action against you for the debt. This time period varies for each state. You can find this time period for your state by going to the link below and looking under "Open Accounts."

If the number of years since you defaulted on this account and stopped making payments on it is greater than the number listed for your state, then they can no longer defeat you in any court action because the debt is time-barred and you [...]
